The architecture that captivated Travis Scott

Castel Grande is much more than a medieval fortress. The restoration by Ticino architect Aurelio Galfetti created a fascinating dialogue between old and new, rock, stone and concrete. One of its most iconic features is the entrance from Piazza del Sole, carved into the mountain and connected to the castle by a lift: an architectural design that also caught the attention of Travis Scott’s team.

  • How do you get to Castel Grande from Bellinzona railway station?

    • Piazza del Sole is about a 5–10-minute walk from Bellinzona railway station. From there, you can enter the passage carved into the rock and take the lift up to Castel Grande.

  • Where can I park?

    • For convenient access to the passage carved into the rock, we recommend parking in the Piazza del Sole car park. Several other public car parks are available in the centre of Bellinzona:

  • Can I take the lift up to Castel Grande?

    • Yes. Castel Grande can also be reached on foot from the historic centre via the following pedestrian access points:

      • the steps from Piazza del Sole, opposite the lift
      • the pedestrian access points from Via Orico
      • Piazza Collegiata
      • Piazza Nosetto
  • What are the opening hours?

    • From March to November, Castel Grande is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. During the winter period, opening hours change to 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.

  • Can I visit the location when it rains?

    • Yes. The passage through the rock and the lift allow you to enjoy an important part of the experience indoors. The visit can then continue in the museum and exhibition spaces at Castel Grande.

  • Is Castel Grande accessible to people with reduced mobility?
