Valle Morobbia Bike - Enjoying sport & nature!Video: Bellinzona e Valli Turismo
A route that crosses the characteristic Valle Morobbia, following the path of the historic Giubiasco-Carena cycling race. The view over the Magadino plain is magnificent, and on the descent you can enjoy a splendid panorama of the three UNESCO Castles of Bellinzona.
The starting point is Giubiasco, the southernmost district of the municipality of Bellinzona overlooking the Magadino Plain. From Giubiasco station, you reach Piazza Grande, one of the largest in the canton and the jewel of the City of Bellinzona with its magnificent green carpet dotted with about ten sculptures by contemporary artists. From here, the canton road climbs into the Morobbia valley, crossed by the river of the same name, up to the San Jorio pass.
Pedaling through the hills with their vineyards, the view stretches over the mountains and the Magadino plain up to Lake Maggiore. In Carena, you leave the asphalt road to join a single trail towards the Paudo mountains, through a beautiful chestnut grove. On this section, you have to push the mountain bike a couple of times. Then, between the Paudo and Ravecchia mountains, you continue on another asphalt section.
The descent towards Bellinzona then begins. During the descent, you can admire up close the three medieval Castles of Bellinzona, which have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2000. A steep mule track descends in zig-zags towards the Sasso Corbaro Castle, perched on a rocky spur, then passing by Montebello Castle to reach Bellinzona railway station. The path is in excellent condition, but special attention should be paid when wet.
