Explanation
Set out to discover the Pizzo di Clara region on a two-day tour. Glorious vistas await on this route, which leads from the Capanna di Brogoldone (1.910 m) and gently descends towards the Alpe di Motto, from where you can enjoy the spectacular view and even spend the night in one of the local farmsteads.
The trail remains largely flat as it continues to the Alpe di Peurett refuge. From there, you ascend around 470 meters along a trail taking around 1.5 hours before reaching the magnificent Canee lake.
From the natural terrace at the Capanna di Brogoldone refuge, the view opens up to reveal ancient glacial valleys, those of the Moesa and Ticino rivers, enclosed by a succession of peaks that gradually fade ever further into the distance. If you look down, you can see the Bellinzonese and the Magadino Plain, through which runs the invisible Periadriatic Seam. With this you realise that you are entering the very heart of the alpine massif, where you can expect to be confronted with ever wilder landscapes but also outstanding beauty.
This gives you something to ponder as you set out on the path from Lumino, which zigzags lazily through the forest and in a couple of hours brings you to Monti di Saurù (1328 m). You can shorten the route by taking the Pizzo di Claro cable car from Lumino, which reaches the peaks in less than 15 minutes. The restaurant at the upper terminus of the cable car is the perfect place for a break. As you turn your back on the final farmsteads of Saurù, you start to climb again. Bit by bit, the horizon broadens and you’ll catch ever wider glimpses of the landscape before the view then opens up completely at the Alpe di Brogoldone, just under 2000 m above sea level. From there you can follow various trails towards Pizzo Molinera, the Martùm, or Pizzo di Claro, also known as Visàgn, beloved among the people of Bellinzona as their very own “little Matterhorn”, whose extraordinary features they get to admire on a daily basis. This itinerary takes you on to the Lago di Canee, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire area, a pearl set amid raw nature with the benefit of a location that is sheltered yet still breathtakingly beautiful. This small alpine lake is located at 2198 m and lies within a basin of rock. Oval in shape, it has a surface of 1.9 hectares. The depth of the lake varies from 4 to 23 m.
The trail then continues down to the village of Claro, passing celebrated spots such as Moncrino and Bens, and eventually reaches the centre of the village where a public bus will quickly transport you back to the starting point.
