Limestone, a widespread sedimentary rock, forms the basis for lime production, an essential building material since antiquity. Lime, obtained by firing limestone and other materials containing calcium carbonate, has been fundamental to the development of the World Cultural Heritage and the art of construction. In the Blenio Valley, lime was used not only in construction but also in agriculture, with the locals building rudimentary kilns for its production. These kilns, a testament to a productive past, were built near rivers or limestone extraction sites. In the region, the many rustic buildings that still dot the landscape are living evidence of the enduring importance of these traditional practices.

Places to visit along the route and nearby:

    Buttino
Once an autonomous municipality until 1836, Buttino had its own small church and confraternity. However, before this date, a devastating landslide struck the village, destroying half of it.

    San Giorgio and Martino
The Church of San Giorgio and Martino in Baselga has existed since 1215, initially dedicated to Saint Hilary. The current baroque building was constructed around 1700, using the foundations of the previous structure. The facade is adorned with 18th-century frescoes depicting Saints George and Martin, with an image of the Madonna above the portal. Inside, above the central triumphal arch, there is a 15th-century crucifix with movable arms and head. The side chapels contain statues of Saint Anthony of Padua and the Virgin Mary, the latter decorated with 18th-century stucco. The pulpit and baptismal font date back to the 17th century, as does a confessional from 1667. A tomb was discovered in the centre of the floor, and there is also a baroque statue of the Madonna with Saint Dominic of Guzmán and Saint Catherine of Siena, crafted in carved, gilded, and polychrome wood with high artistic detail.

    Oratory of San Bernardino
The Oratory of San Bernardino in Cozzera, mentioned as early as 1205, contains a fresco depicting the Crucifixion between Saints Bernardino of Siena and Anthony of Padua, alongside a scene of the lamentation over the dead Christ. These works were painted in 1774 by Francesco Rotanzi of Faido. Cozzera was also home to a convent of the Humiliati, suppressed in 1570 by Pope Pius V. The convent hosted merchants and pilgrims travelling towards the Greina, while the monks taught the local population the art of weaving.

Among Cozzera’s notable figures are Giuseppe Antonio Martinelli (1771), a renowned lawyer in Milan, and Giorgio Maria Martinelli, born in 1655, who founded a college in Rho in 1714. From Ghirone hails Degiorgi Rocco, a professor, writer, and photography enthusiast.

    “Red Water” Spring (Aquilesco)
Continuing the walk southeast from the hamlet of Aquilesco, you’ll come across the old road that, until 1958, was the only route connecting Ghirone and Olivone. The new road was built that same year during the construction of the Luzzone Dam. A short distance from the start of this ancient path is a spring of ferruginous water, with a constant flow and temperature. In the 1970s, there was a plan to create a small wellness centre around the spring, but the project was abandoned following the death of its promoter.

    Genziana Restaurant (Ponte Semina)
Until the early 1950s, there was a rustic building known as Osteria Genziana, run by the family of Domenico Maestri. Domenico was the first producer of gentian liqueur in the valley, earning him the affectionate nickname “Genzanat.”

Church of Saints Agatha and Maurice in Campo

The current building, featuring two naves facing south, dates back to the late 16th century. During the 1983 restorations, the foundations of a Romanesque chapel (circa 11th century) were uncovered, partially incorporated into the present structure. The church preserves 15th-century frescoes (remnants of the original chapel) and other valuable paintings in the two apses, attributed to the Tarilli family of Cureglia (late 16th - early 17th century). Particularly noteworthy is a 1592 oil painting, protected by glass, depicting the Virgin and Child, commissioned by the De Ripa brothers originally from Campo. In 1608, Cardinal Federico Borromeo elevated the Church of Saints Maurice and Agatha to an independent parish, separating it from that of Olivone.
