The Gorge has been carved by the force of water into the granite (Leventina gneiss) over thousands of years. The first to venture to build a road through these impervious Gorge were the Uranians in 1500. Up to two-thirds of Canton Uri's income came from paying tolls at the Dazio Grande. The development of means of transport, from mules to stagecoaches, necessitated the construction of a road in 1820 by the "young" Canton Ticino. As you walk through the Gorge, you can observe the overlapping of communication routes over the centuries, the Gotthard Railway with its helicoidal tunnels, the motorway and its viaducts.
