Iron mines in Valletta

Among the countless mines, those in the upper Morobbia Valley were exploited for iron ore extraction probably from prehistoric times until the first half of the 19th century, but only the medieval period and the period between the late 18th century and around 1830 are documented.

During twenty years of historical and scientific research carried out in the upper Morobbia Valley, numerous mining sites have been identified; of these, the Pozzo Mine and the Diritta Mine were selected for restoration and opening to visitors, and were reopened between 2005 and 2007.
