Four Sources Route: To the Source Area of the TicinoPhoto: Bellinzona e Valli Turismo
The Trail of the Four Sources in the San Gottardo massif leads to the sources of the Rhine, the Reuss, the Ticino and the Rhone. A trek through unique alpine landscapes, rich in a great variety of plants, animals and historical evidence.
The Trail of the Four Sources leads to the sources of the rivers Rhine, Reuss, Ticino and Rhone, crosses contrasting landscapes in the cantons of Uri, Grisons, Ticino and Valais and passes six passes: Maighels, Sella, Gottardo, Lucendro, Novena and Furka. The hike crosses wetlands with streams, ponds, lakes and moors with typical vegetation. Above the tree line, there are long stretches where dwarf shrubs grow.
Stage 4: Capanna Piansecco CAS - Obergesteln
The trail leads to the Ticino source region, below the Novena Pass, home to countless marmots. The trail continues through the Novena Pass, the magnificent alpine pastures in the Ägene Valley, a suspension bridge and finally runs along the Rhone to Obergesteln.
A high-altitude hike with magnificent panoramas, it runs along the northern side of the Val Bedretto. After climbing the Novena Pass, it descends 1100 m to Obergoms. From the route, you can see the Gries glacier, the wind power plant, the highest altitude in Europe, a stone bridge in "Ladstafel" style from 1761, a gorge crossed by a suspension bridge and typical Walser houses.
