This stunning route starts from Carena (958 m), the last village in the Valle Morobbia, and climbs up to "la Biscia" (2,002 m), where the recently renovated Capanna Gesero is located and where it is possible to stay overnight or stop for a simple break.
From this point, a beautiful flat path supported by walls and military walkways leads to the San Jorio Pass (2,011 m). This pass has an important role in the valley's history since at the beginning of the last century many locals smuggled goods through San Jorio starting from Carena or Gesero. Rice, pasta, salami, fabrics, and carpets were imported while cigarettes, salt, and coffee were exported. This activity continued until after the war.
Along the route, it is possible to see trenches and bunkers dating back to the First World War, explained through the informational panels of the Ticino Fortifications (forti.ch).
From the famous pass that divides Switzerland from Italy, the route returns to Carena passing by the Alpe di Giumello (1,594 m), where excellent D.O.P. alpine cheese is produced during the summer.
Along the way, there are several panoramic points, including one particularly fascinating above the Alpe Giumello. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Magadino plain extending to Lake Locarno, as well as the surrounding mountains. This observation point is ideal for admiring the landscape and taking memorable photos.
