Visit to the Faido Sawmill and the Piumogna Waterfall
Discovering the Piumogna Waterfall and the Patrimonial Sawmill
After a brief introduction to Faido and the station district during the Belle Époque, you walk down (1 km, about 20 minutes on foot) to reach the sparkling Piumogna Waterfall and the Patrimonial Sawmill.
Upon arriving at the sawmill, you enter the room dedicated to the forest to watch a documentary that explains its history, followed by an exhibition dedicated to mushrooms and insects. Then, you move to the upper level where you will find the historic horizontal saw—the only one of its kind still in operation in Switzerland. Brought from Lipzia in 1896, it remained operational until the mid-1970s, producing the beams and planks necessary for constructing houses and stables.
At the end of the visit, you have the option to freely explore either the educational trail (2 km long with an elevation gain of 100 meters) around the Piumogna Waterfall or the “animals trail” (1 km long) along the Ticino River.
In the waterfall area, there are facilities equipped with tables, grill stations, and a playground.
The visit is suitable for children aged 6 and up.
