The Lukmanier Pass
The Lukmanier Pass is much more than just a mountain crossing – it is a gateway to a world of raw beauty and authentic Alpine charm. Leading from the north into the stunning Blenio Valley, known as the “Valley of the Sun” for its exceptional brightness, this pass is a haven of mountain pastures, towering peaks, and breathtaking vistas. Here, nature, history, and tradition intertwine in perfect harmony.
For centuries, the pass has been a key route, once favoured by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa for crossing the Alps on his way to Italy. Even today, travellers can sense its rich history while admiring the timeless beauty of the landscape.
A Journey Through History and Nature
Despite its rugged Alpine terrain, the Ticino side of the pass is deeply shaped by rural life. Over generations, mountain farmers have transformed this once-inhospitable land into a scenic gem, where magnificent views unfold at every turn.
For hiking enthusiasts, the Pro Natura Lukmanier Centre in Acquacalda serves as the perfect starting point for exploring this captivating Alpine region. A must-do experience is the spectacular hike from Acquacalda, passing through the stunning Passo del Sole (Sun Pass) before reaching the enchanting Piora Valley, known for its crystal-clear mountain lakes.
An Accessible Pass All Year Round
Unlike many other Alpine crossings, the Lukmanier Pass remains open most of the year, thanks to its relatively moderate altitude of less than 2,000 metres. In winter, the breathtaking Campra plain, located just below the pass, is home to Ticino’s largest Nordic skiing centre, offering world-class cross-country ski trails.
During summer and autumn, buses run from Disentis, Bellinzona, and Olivone, making access to the pass even easier for nature lovers and hikers.
For those looking for a relaxing stay in the heart of nature, the Campra Alpine Lodge & Spa offers comfortable rooms, a restaurant serving local cuisine, and a wellness spa – the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.
