The route crosses the sunny Blenio Valley up to the Lukmanier Pass, one of the most beautiful mountain pass landscapes in Switzerland with a territory of remarkable geomorphological and historical-cultural content, encountering numerous testimonies of the valley's past.
The starting point is Biasca, center of the Ambrosian valleys Blenio, Leventina, and Riviera, with a beautiful view of the impressive Santa Petronilla waterfall and the massive rocky walls surrounding the riverside village. The Biasca debris flow that struck the region between Biasca and Malvaglia in the 16th century is crossed, then the route ascends towards the Blenio Valley along a landscape with a long agricultural tradition and significant naturalistic, historical, and cultural interest. Everything in this valley reflects the authenticity of a land attached to its traditions. After passing the towns of Malvaglia, Semione (where the ancient ruins of Serravalle Castle are located), and Ludiano with its typical grotti, the route continues towards Motto countryside. From there, it ascends to the slope leading to Casserio, home of the Roberto Donetta photographic archive, and the village of Leontica, where the beautiful Romanesque church of San Carlo di Negrentino with its magnificent frescoes stands.
The route continues uphill to Cancorì, located in the sunny amphitheater of Nara, boasting a panorama of majestic peaks and a multitude of hiking possibilities. From here, the descent begins along the mountain road switchbacks reaching Marolta, then climbs again towards Olivone, where you can admire the old bourgeois houses of Blenio emigrants, stop to buy some local dairy products, or visit the small local museum "Cà da Rivöi" dedicated to the ancient agricultural civilization. The last stage leads to the incomparable alpine landscape moving towards the Lukmanier region up to the pass borders for Graubünden, from where you can continue towards the Surselva region making use of an additional network of special e-bike charging stations present in that area (more information at www.regiun-surselva.ch).
Author’s recommendation
The itinerary is based on the bike routes proposed by Svizzera Mobile with some variants to reach e-bike charging stations located along the entire route. E-bike charging is free, faster than a normal charge, and can be done without having your own charger.
During your ride, take a printed copy of our web map with you for safety.
