A beautiful climb to discover the characteristic Valle Morobbia, along the route of the historic popular bicycle race of Italian Switzerland “Giubiasco-Carena”, which was the scene of numerous national and Swiss championship races.
The starting point is Giubiasco, the southern part of the Bellinzona agglomeration overlooking the Magadino Plain. From Giubiasco station, you reach Piazza Grande, one of the largest in the canton and the city's highlight with its magnificent green carpet dotted with about ten sculptures by contemporary artists.
You climb towards Valle Morobbia from where you enjoy an unparalleled view of the surrounding mountains and the Magadino Plain.
The paved road rises along the vineyard slope leading to Lôro and Pianezzo, then continues towards Vellano, the first of the five hamlets of the former municipality of S. Antonio, now a district of the new City of Bellinzona.
From the village of Vellano, it is worth visiting the “Water Way,” an educational path that shows how energy is produced and tells the history of water use in Valle Morobbia.
After Pianezzo and before Vellano, keep right and avoid the two detours to Paudo. Further ahead, you reach Melera and finally Carena, 958 m above sea level, the route's final point. Beyond Carena, the dirt road leads to the archaeological area of the ancient furnace and the forge, activated at the end of the 18th century, located on the “Iron Way,” a cross-border thematic route offering the possibility to retrace the roads used by transporters to carry iron extracted and worked in Carena towards Ceresio and Lario. Another interesting thematic route (ForTI project) also starts from Carena, leading to the rediscovery of military constructions and fortifications dating back to the First World War, going as far as San Jorio and the Gesero hut.
