Along the entire course of the Ticino River, if excluding Lake Maggiore, there is only one inhabited island: it is located in Giornico, in the Lower Leventina, and the island is connected to the mainland by two beautiful stone bridges. Giornico is also the northernmost village of Leventina where vineyards are cultivated.

Thanks to its remarkable historical and cultural heritage, Giornico is a veritable open-air museum and one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. The church dedicated to San Nicola da Bari, commonly known as San Nicolao - built in the 12th century and attested in 1202 by a parchment in the Chironico parish archives - is considered one of the greatest examples of Lombard Romanesque architecture in Canton Ticino.

The other six churches are also interesting, including two of the oldest: Santa Maria del Castello and San Pellegrino. Access to these two churches has become easier thanks to the "Chiavi della Cultura" application (www.chiavicultura.ch).

There are also several ancient houses in Giornico such as the "Stanga" with its interesting frescoed façade and home to the Museo di Leventina. La Congiunta, a reinforced concrete building by the architect Peter Märkli, which houses works by the sculptor Hans Josephsohn, is also worth visiting.

The ‘Monument to the Battle of Sassi Grossi’ by sculptor Apollonio Pessina from Ligornetto, inaugurated on 1 August 1937, bears witness to the historical vicissitudes. It commemorates the battle fought on 28 December 1478 between the Leventina people and the Confederates against Milanese troops.

    Tips and suggestions

Montagnepulite: This project was born to promote an effective management and sustainable use of mountain huts in Ticino, and in particular the litter management. The responsible management of litter in the mountains is a matter of common sense.
