This pleasant circular walk, which mainly touches the nuclei of Sallo (Olivone), Pinaderio and Aquilesco (Aquila), is easy to walk and does not present any particular difficulties.
It is appreciated by both bikers and hikers, as well as by the local residents for a simple and pleasant outing.
The route is favored not only for the beauty of the places it crosses but also for the numerous points of interest along the way; these include four votive chapels and an 1800s oratory, typical dry stone walls, rustic settlements, and last but not least, objects of naturalistic and landscape interest.
Starting from Olivone, in just under a kilometer, you enter the pleasant neighborhoods of Solario and Sallo following the white-red trail markings and then find yourself in large meadows before the forest. A short slightly steeper stretch allows you to reach the suspension bridge, inaugurated in April 2022.
Built by the Blenio Restoration Group, the structure is more than 70 meters long and has a walking width of just under a meter, connecting the nuclei of Sallo and Pinaderio.
It is said that already in the 1800s and before—this route, once a mule track—was used by the ancestors of the region to reach the alps of Garzotto, Motterascio and Scaradra with livestock, and also to transport dairy products in special containers carried on the strong and sturdy shoulders of the farmers.
Once crossed, perhaps with some thrills, the bridge, always on a wide and pleasant forest trail, you reach the typical nucleus of Pinaderio and just below Ponto Aquilesco, hamlets of the former municipality of Aquila which mainly include second homes and temporary farmer residences.
In the Pinaderio area there was a quarry where stones were extracted, transported to the cantonal road by means of a cable car and then to the lime kilns, one located in Dangio (operational during the First World War until the 1930s) and the other between Aquila and Olivone.
From Aquilesco you gradually return north following the Basso 2 trail which, in the dense forest that at times borders the cantonal road, leads to Concherio and then, facing the grandeur of Sosto, to Olivone to end the route. Olivone offers its visitors numerous churches and the "Cà da Rivöi" museum, which features valuable pieces and collections.
Author’s recommendation
It is recommended to start from Olivone or Pinaderio where there are large parking areas available.
The white-red trail that crosses the bridge allows you to connect the Sosto trails, towards the Greina, Val Camadra, Val di Campo and Luzzone area to the north and towards the Val Soi to reach the Capanne dell'Adula and, for more experienced hikers, the majestic summit of Adula, at 3,402 m, the highest peak in the Ticino Canton.
