Explanation
Faido, a village situated in a green pocket in the middle of the Leventina valley, it is located on Europe's most important rail and road axes.
During the 19th century, new road access and exceptional accessibility to this alpine village meant Faido became a favoured resort location for the Milanese aristocracy and upper bourgeoisie.
Majestic hotels, now closed, and liberty style cottages are clear evidence of this glorious past. The Golden Age of tourism in Faido reached its peak at the end of the Belle Epoque: in 1913, a holiday in Faido cost more than one in St. Moritz!
Today, Faido's real treasure is provided by the natural resources present in the region. The Piumogna waterfalls are an extraordinary sight and easily accessible either on foot from the train station or by car. The mountains surrounding the village are also very engaging. The Pizzo Pettine, Pizzo Molare, Pizzo Forno and of course Carì, made famous by the presence of a sunny linked ski area, can be chosen as the ideal destination of an extraordinary alpine excursion.
