Exhibition - The power of Max Weiss

The Association of the Monument of St John the Baptist in Gnosca is pleased to invite you to visit the exhibition The Strength of Max Weiss, which will take place at the Monument of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist) in Gnosca, from 4 June to 31 October 2023.

The artist Max Weiss (1921-1996) is one of the leading Swiss sculptors active between the 1940s and 1990s. Between 1935 and 1939 he trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Lucerne, where he turned his attention to sculpture. In 1945 he settled in Ticino, first in Cassina d'Agno and two years later in Tremona, where he worked for the rest of his life, devoting himself mainly to sculpture in bronze and stone and from the late 1960s also in aluminium. From 1954, he won the Federal Fine Arts Award three years in a row. He subsequently participated in numerous group exhibitions and held solo shows in Switzerland and abroad. Highlights were those held in Madrid (Museo del Prado, Ateneo Hall) in 1963, in Barcelona (Palacio della Virreina) in 1964 and in Martigny (Fondation Giannadda) in 1991.

Since this period, private collectors and public institutions have been interested in his work and his works have been installed in urban spaces in many Swiss and foreign cities.
